As part of Black History month, we were delighted to be able to attend a Two Counties Trust Event at the Museum of Making in Derby. The theme this year is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.
10 of our students attended the event and participated in three sessions, all focussed on learning about the stories of prominent black British historical figures, as well as learning about Africa’s monuments and tourist sites beyond Egypt’s pyramids.
The afternoon offered an opportunity for students to reflect on what they had learnt and to plan an assembly to enlighten their schools about the significance of Black History Month and more widely, black history as part of the education system.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and were excited to share their new knowledge with students back at college, reflected by the legacy sentence that they created: “we will continue to shine a light on the narratives of black historical figures that were once hidden in the shadows”.
