Springwell Community College Celebrates World Religion Day with Day of Learning
As part of its World Religion Day celebrations, The Two Counties Trust brought together students from its family of schools for a day of immersive learning at The Open Centre in Derby. The event offered an opportunity for students to explore diverse religious traditions and deepen understanding of the faiths practised within local communities.
The day began with a visit to the Geeta Bhawan Hindu Temple. Outside the temple, students explored its intricate symbols and architecture to better understand their significance. They also learned about the faith’s history and the practices of Hindu prayer. One of the visit’s highlights for many students was trying on traditional colourful clothing often worn during Hindu celebrations. As a parting gesture, the temple kindly gifted sweets and fruit to students and staff, embodying the spirit of generosity central to the faith.
The next stop was the Jamie Mosque, where students respectfully explored the sacred space, learning about the history of Islam, the daily prayers central to Muslim life and key religious artefacts, including the Quran, the Misbaha and the Minbar. They also discovered the significance of the pilgrimage to Mecca, gaining insight into why millions of Muslims make the journey every year.
In the afternoon, students visited the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara. They were introduced to the Five Ks and learned about Sikh prayer and the teachings of the Gurus who have shaped the religion. To conclude their visit, they experienced the Gurdwara’s Langar, tasting food prepared and served as part of the Gurdwara’s community service.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated remarkable engagement and respect, embodying the Trust’s core values of ambition, teamwork and honesty.
Elisha Allsop, Trust Lead for RE, said: “At TTCT, Religious Education is highly valued aspect of our curriculum and student experience. The opportunity for students and staff to come together as one Trust, in order to mark World Religion Day 2025 at our first Trust-wide Multi-Faith event, confirms this. All students exemplified our Trust values, in addition to demonstrating respect for diversity and religious worldviews through participation in a thoroughly enriching experience. I would like to thank The Open Centre, Derby, for facilitating an excellent event.”
Students across the Trust expressed their enthusiasm, with one from Selston High School noting, “The day was awesome! We got to meet and talk to people from other religions and other schools. I learnt a lot about what people do and believe in from other religions. The places we visited were very detailed and contained many beautiful paintings, carpets and artefacts. We also enjoyed tasting food from other cultures.”
