We have been working collaboratively with the ‘Walking Together’ group from Markham Vale; a group that is committed to commemorating the 106 men that tragically lost their lives in the 1937, 1938 and 1973 mining disasters at Markham Vale coal mine. Many of our students have relatives that worked at the mine and who remember the 1973 disaster well. Last year, our Year 9 students took part in workshops at college, where visitors from Markham Vale taught our students about these disasters and what life was like for a miner at this time. They all produced brilliant pieces of work commemorating those who were killed.
On Wednesday we took four of our now Year 10 students to Markham Vale Environment Centre to commemorate 13 of the miners who were tragically killed in the 1938 mining disaster. The four students were selected to read pieces of work that they had created in front of a large audience. They presented their work brilliantly and we are proud to have been a part of such a poignant day.
