We love having authors visit us at Springwell, not only to tell us about their books and give students the opportunity to get their own copies signed, but also to inspire them with the creative workshops they run alongside their presentation.

On World Book Day we were incredibly fortunate to have a visit from Matt Oldfield, author of the very popular ‘Ultimate Football Heroes’ series. These fun biographies tell the life stories of the world’s greatest footballers from Maradona through to Messi, from Beckham through to Kane.

Matt works with schools, charities and organisations including the National Literacy Trust, to deliver literacy workshops aimed at football fans and reluctant readers.  His workshops aim to combine key aspects of writing (dialogue, character, emotion, setting) with key aspects of football and life (teamwork, bouncing back, achieving dreams).

Matt held four workshops for our Y7, Y8 and Y9 students, inspiring them with his career as a writer, discussion of his books and the brilliance of reading.

At lunchtime, keen fans of the Football Heroes series were able to meet Matt who signed their books for them.

We had a fantastic day with Matt. The students interacted brilliantly and were thrilled to meet him and spend time with him. So much so, that we intend to book Matt to visit us again as soon as possible.
